The Global Education Experiences (GlobEEs), aims at providing international education experiences for students from different universities and countries. The program was designed in 2012 and was first implemented in 2013 as part of an institutional cooperation program between Chang Jung Christian University (CJCU-Taiwan) and Satya Wacana Christian University (UKSW-Indonesia). In 2018, Duta Wacana Christian University (UKDW-Indonesia) joined the program, enriching the program into trilateral cooperation. In 2019, UKSW co-hosted the program with UDW in welcoming CJCU participants to Indonesia. The theme for GlobEEs 2019 is “A taste of Indonesia”.
Since its inception, GlobEEs Program has always focused on working to raise global awareness and foster mutual cultural understanding. In this borderless world, the role of university students as future global leaders is crucial. The more the students from different backgrounds meet and reach a mutual understanding, the better they will be able to work together as global citizens dealing with the complexities of today’s world.
The inaugural 2013 Program was successfully held at UKSW, Indonesia, from 2 to 14 September 2013. The theme of the program was “Youth and Social Responsibilities” and it provided both academic and cultural experiences, such as lectures and cultural presentations, community service, field studies and excursions. Each university sent 10 students and a leader to participate.
The lectures were held on the UKSW campus which is located in Salatiga, Central Java. The participants were given an abundance of oral information and written material about Indonesia – lifestyle and culture, education, economy, tourism, and waste management. To follow up on the lectures, field studies were undertaken and visits arranged to, for example, companies as well as an NGO which manufactures products from recycled material.
In order to give the students a better understanding of how Indonesian people live, the participants visited Indonesian families to have dinner with them. They were also invited by the Mayor of Salatiga to meet him and his family for dinner. Further, the GlobEEs participants visited an elementary school to do community service by teaching the pupils about Taiwanese culture, thus there was cultural exchange between the participants and the local community in Salatiga as well.
It would not have been a complete program if the participants had not gone on excursions to well known and popular places in Indonesia! Thus they visited the Bromo Mountain, the Borobudur Temple, the UllenSentalu Museum, the famous Malioboro shopping street in Yogyakarta and they also went to Solo for batik making practice.
On the last day of the program, all students took part in a cultural performance night. They danced, sang, and talked about their country in front of an enthusiastic audience.
The inaugural GlobEEs program was an inspiring event. We hope it will grow and develop even further in the future.
Basic requirements to join the GlobEEs Program: an active Student of UKSW or CJCU or UKDW, ability to communicate in English, ability to work in a group, has leadership values.
